The Road Trip To Alaska in my Roamify Hard-Wall Camper
There’s something about loading up the truck, grabbing a few friends, and driving north without much of a plan that makes a trip feel like a real adventure.
A few friends and I took the Hard-Wall Camper from Abbotsford, BC all the way up to Hyder, Alaska. It was a lot of driving, a lot of stops, some incredible scenery, and more than a few moments where we were very happy to have a comfortable place to sleep at the end of the day.
The drive north
The further north we got, the more the landscape started to change. The roads got quieter, the mountains got bigger, and we started seeing wildlife along the way.
One of the highlights was seeing grizzlies in the wild. There’s something pretty surreal about watching a grizzly from a safe distance and realizing you're just passing through their backyard.
The road trip was a mix of exploring during the day and finding somewhere scenic to stop for the night. Having the Hard-Wall Camper with us made it easy to spend less time worrying about where we were going to sleep and more time enjoying the trip.
After a long day of driving or exploring, it was pretty nice to climb into an actual bed, get warm, and have a comfortable night of sleep.
Glacier views and cold beers
Eventually, we made it to a glacier, and it was one of those places that makes the entire drive worth it.
The scale of the mountains and ice was hard to comprehend. We spent some time taking it all in, exploring the area, and, naturally, enjoying a few good beers afterwards.
That became one of my favourite parts of the trip — having the freedom to spend the day exploring and then having our own comfortable setup waiting for us at the end of it.
No setting up a tent in the rain. No sleeping on the ground. Just climb into the camper and call it a night.
Making pasta on top of a mountain
One of the funniest parts of the trip was deciding that we were going to make pasta from scratch on top of a mountain.
In theory, it sounded incredible. In reality... it was a disaster.
We had flour everywhere, things weren't exactly going according to plan, and making pasta from scratch in the middle of nowhere probably wasn't the most efficient dinner decision we've ever made.
But somehow, after all the chaos, we ended up with a plate of pasta that tasted ridiculously good.
Maybe it was the view. Maybe it was the fact that we had worked way too hard for it. Or maybe food just tastes better when you've made it on the side of a mountain with your friends.
Either way, I'd do it again.
Why the Hard-Wall worked so well for this trip
Having the Hard-Wall Camper along made a huge difference on a road trip like this.
We could spend the entire day outside exploring, driving, hiking, looking for wildlife, or just stopping whenever something caught our attention. When we were done for the day, we had a comfortable place to sleep without having to completely reset our campsite.
With four of us on the trip, having a proper sleeping setup also meant we could actually recharge between long days on the road.
And honestly, after driving through some of the most incredible scenery in BC and Alaska, being able to crawl into a comfortable bed at night was something I appreciated more and more every day.
A trip I'll definitely remember
The drive from Abbotsford to Hyder was a long one, but that's really what made the trip.
We saw grizzlies, stood in front of glaciers, drank good beer, attempted to make pasta on a mountain, and spent a lot of time just enjoying being somewhere completely different.
The Hard-Wall gave us a comfortable home base through all of it, but the best part wasn't the camper itself, it was having the freedom to take it somewhere like this with three good friends and see where the road took us.
Some trips are about getting to the destination.
This one was definitely about everything that happened along the way.
